Information for umpires

Getting started

All umpires have to have at least a New umpire certificate. It is dead easy, do it now!

  1. Sign up with Netball NZ

  2. Do the new player umpire module online - follow the step by step instructions.

  3. Sit the test (online, open book)

  4. Download your certificate and send it to me

Getting comfortable

Get some practice by joining teams during their training sessions and upire their half-court or training games. Let me know if you want to do that and I will arrange it for you.

Join the Whatsapp group - email me if you want to be added.

Training and support

Once you are ready to take the court, you will have the support of an umpire coach to help you along your journey.

HPNC has umpiring sessions for new umpires. Keep an eye out on the Whatsapp group for dates.

Whistles and shirts

PCNC will supply a PCNC branded umpire tshirt and a whistle.

If you still fit your one from last year, please keep using it. If not, let me know and I will give you another.

Helpful resources

Download Rules of Netball on your phone - a very handy reference. Available on iOS and Android.

Netball Dunedin and Netfit put out an app (free). It has a lot of fitness things but also a section for explaining rules - very handy for umpires! Available for iOS and Android.

Which games will I umpire?

Check your messages on Whatsapp - probably Tue/Wed/Thu before the weekend for allocations. Make sure to join the Whatsapp group because we can help each other if something unforeseen happens.

If you are a Junior umpire (Y8), you will be allocated Y5/6 games to start off with and then maybe Y7 games later in the season.

If you are a College umpire, depending on your experience, we will ask you to do Y 6/7/8 games and depending on your progress, maybe some College games later in the season.

Senior umpires, we will start you off with College and lower Senior teams if you are new, and progress from there.

What happens on game day?

  1. Sign in at the Umpire window (downstairs, next to the cafe)

  2. On court: Check nails & jewelry

  3. Make sure the toss happens

  4. Make sure there is a scorer (we are using My Netball Manager). There will be tutorials during the season so you can get familiar with it.

  5. Pick a game ball.

  6. Play and enjoy!

And oh joy, you can use the umpire room all day. There are cubbies for your stuff and nice clean toilets. Even a kitchen!

When do I get paid?

Payments are tallied up and deposited to your bank account twice a season - one after the first round and the last after the last game. Make sure I have your bank account.
Umpire fees per game

Prem $25
Senior $ 20
College $ 15
Y7&8 $ 12
Y5&6 $ 10

Talk to me about being assessed for a Centre Badge. You will get assessed at HPNC and then be allocated games by the centre.

You will need to have a Centre badge to sit the Zone Theory. Let me know if you want to sit these, PCNC will pay for the test if you pass.
